British artist Thomas Duggan (born 1984) works at the confluence of art, science, material research and engineering to create ethereal, technical and inventive work. His sculptures, installations and prints unite scientific, mathematical, craft and technological processes with fragility and intuition. The resulting work, showing here, is a process of exploration and observations into spirit and science. Working from the nano to the architectural scale, Thomas brings together the old with the new, using both traditional materials, craftsmanship and advanced technology and techniques. This gallery presents Thomas’ new work – the relationship between hand and machine using porcelain and advanced robotic fabrication. A little peek at a new architectural commission 🙏 Built in the 18th century and surrounded by a mature orchard this beautiful stone building will start a new lease of life next month. Very happy for a successful planning application to transform this beautiful building into a four bedroom home. The clients and I are creating a new home for their young family by renewing and reconnecting to senses, material, touch, light, space, land, water, environment, food and community. Plans include a polished compacted-earth floor with ground-source underfloor heating, natural, local and environmentally conscious materials and principles throughout, rain water harvesting for sewage, growing food and sustainable energy / electrical systems to mention a few..we’ll be researching and reducing geopathic stress and EMFs but not disconnecting and are being inspired by geometric and spiritual practices to create a little sanctuary and environmental ecosystem..🌱 #architecture #environment #building #land #natural #material #project #design #sustainability #restoration #stonebuilding #design #ecosystem #earth #architecturalphotography

Exhibition🚀📸: As part of the closing of the first year, we are organising and excited to share the third and last edition of the series of events called 'Design Dialogues' alongside the final presentations of the Master in Design for Emergent Futures. It has been an honour to be a part of this first year and so incredibly proud of the students! 🙏👌 MDEF Research, Design and Development Studios is led by the brilliant Tomas Diez and Oscar Tomico. The Masters is a nine-month experience for students who wish to expand their focus and interests and acquire the skills to turn protests into prototypes, ideas into actions, and who are engaged in the mission of transforming the current status of affairs in society and environment. The programme is structured in four critical steps: Exploration, Instrumentation, Reflection and Application. Through these four steps, the Masters aims to provide strategic vision and tools for designers, sociologists, economists and computer scientists, to become agents of change in multiple professional environments. The programme focuses on the design of interventions in the form of products, platforms and deployments that aim to produce new emergent futures. Over the last weeks we’ve been transforming our incredible KUKA Robot into a tool to print ceramics. We’ve been collaborating with Autodesk and Aerospace Cornwall and will be sharing the experiments and results in the weeks to come but I thought I’d share the making of the tool first because quite often the tool that makes the work is as interesting, integrated and enjoyable to build, problem solve and experiment with, as the work itself. We’re working on the integration of the software and hardware but just as important is the ability to customise the material composition by adding bio-ethanol and bio-additives etc. The ability to customise and experiment with the material which informs the design and development of the tool is incredibly valuable and an important process...and these materials are one of the most natural and reusable materials there is.. so we’re not polluting the world with our experiments. Here’s a project using reverse engineered silk for Chanel No5. The perfume is biologically encapsulated on a molecular level during the self-assembly process of the silk protein. The colour you see is structural iridescence, the same as a butterfly’s wing, therefore no pigment exists and also no waste packaging or plastics.
